Royal Mail has issued a statement defending its approach to the recruitment of temporary staff, all of which meet robust security standards, the company insists.
In seeking to safeguard customers' mail, Royal Mail has stated that it operates "very robust, fully audited, vetting procedures, including checking criminal records, both for the temporary workers we are directly engaging in the run up to Christmas, and for the staff which, as a matter of course, are supplied by agencies throughout the year to help us deal with fluctuations in letter volumes."
All these people are vetted to exactly the same standard as permanent staff at Royal Mail, they said, to standards and procedures as approved by the regulator, Postcomm, and "in line with all employment law, as well as the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act."
Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) are holding the first of two 24 hours strikes today, Thursday.
