Absenteeism is being replaced by so-called "presenteeism" at many British firms as many worketrs fear for their jobs in the recession, a survey suggests.
Presenteeism describes the situation when employees become more conscientious about work attendance and not taking days off, but are not necessarily more productive.
Research by Lancaster University's Centre for Organisational Health and Wellbeing, which surveyed 2,247 workers, found that 66% were working more hours because of worries about employment security, and 42% said they had felt more insecure about their jobs in recent months.
The survey also found that 45% of those surveyed agreed it is best to ''play it safe at work and keep my head down'' at work, while 41% said they have a negative attitude at work.
Women appear to feel more vulnerable in the present economic climate; 71% of female employees reported spending more time at work against 61% of male employees.
