Public risk management association Alarm has launched a modelling tool for public sector organisations to measure their risk management performance.

The Alarm National Performance Model for Risk Management in Public Services was unveiled at the association's recent annual conference in Bournemouth.

Organisations can use the National Perfomance Model Assessment Framework for quick health checks, with a self-assessment questionnaire designed to test current performance against the Framework. This forms part of a benchmarking programme that Alarm and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy plan to launch in 2010.

Alarm adds that the new model:

-measures current performance against a recognised achievement level;
- provides the basis for clear performance indicators;
- acts as a catalyst for improved performance within the organsation;
- informs assurance in corporate governance terms;
- demonstrates current maturity both in terms of external inspection expectations as well as national and international standards;
- allows for comparison with other organisations and learning from best practice through systematic benchmarking
